Gary is a geeky-binge watcher who loves to pen down all that he watches. The night-owl has just got two hobbies, binge-watching all the latest shows and writing everything about them.
This is your guide to streaming all the 2024 Oscar-nominated movies, so you can stay up to date with the moviemaking accomplishments.
While the world had raved on about “Barbenheimer” past year, there is no doubt those two blockbusters would be nominated and continue their charm to the Oscars 2024.
When last summer the world was divided between a male genius who could make bombs and a woman who fought to bring justice to her womanhood in neon rollerblades, the loudest on the internet was Barbie, but soon Oppenheimer will also face the glory together with Barbie at this year’s Oscars, the 96th Academy Awards for blockbusters.
Whether it’s your favorite movie that wins or if the art just scratches your heart, you can appreciate all the major 2024 Oscar-nominated movies as they will be receiving their fair share of awards.
Most of the movies can be watched online on streaming platforms, except for three. Of course, streaming on VOD platforms does not require an IMAX 70mm projector, because it’s the time when all you need is a quick sign and you’re good to go.
12 Oscar Nominated Movies to Binge-Watch in 2024
Here are all the major movies you must watch before the Oscars, so you can judge them by yourself and understand why these blockbusters were nominated!
1. Oppenheimer
Leading the nomination game with 13 nods, this Christopher Nolan film is applauded for both, Cillian Murphy for acting in the leading role, and Nolan for directing, along with several other aspects. If Nolan wins this one, it will be his first time ever winning an Academy Award.
This historical piece showcases the invention of the atomic bomb and other nuclear weapons, amidst World War II in the New Mexico desert.
While it’s not the longest movie in the batch for clocking in with 3-hour runtime, it is most likely to win at least 1 or 2 awards, given its popularity and correct depiction of history and science.
Stream Oppenheimer on Peacock, Apple TV+, and Amazon Prime.
2. Barbie
This movie won the Barbenheimer box office face-off of 2023, and while the debate of Margot Robbie being snubbed for the Best Actress award is still going on, we came to appreciate what it depicts. With 8 nominations under its belt, Barbie’s live-action film was the main course for all those who are in favor of bringing justice to ongoing gender wars.
Portraying a perfect picture of a stereotypical plastic doll, Barbie is world-famous, grossing over $1 billion worldwide, and is known as the best theatrical success of 2023. Barbie is nominated majorly for having the Best Director. Once again, it’s Barbie VS Oppenheimer, because it’s Nolan VS Gerwig. You can stream Barbie on Max.
3. The Holdovers
For a bunch of kids who had nowhere to go, and the teacher who stays behind to babysit them, this movie may not appeal to first-timers. But as viewers get to see why it is nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Paul Giamatti), Best Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), and two more nominations, you will see that the raw emotions and acting, along with cinematography, this movie is just pure nostalgic and heart-touching.
Viewers can stream The Holdovers on Peacock, and get to see the reason for it having 5 nominations.
4. Killers of the Flower Moon
This film earned 10 nominations, one of which the viewers and audience are the most happy about: Best Actress nomination for Lily Gladstone. As the first Indigenous American woman who has been recognized by the Academy, this film has done justice to the tragic story of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma in the 1920s. Not to mention, the director, Martin Scorsese’s 10th nomination is a mark of his great talent in directing the movie.
Now that viewers can watch Killers of the Flower Moon at home on Apple TV+, they are free to take as many intermissions as they like!
5. Anatomy of a Fall
There’s no doubt that this movie landed another major Award after winning a Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes and having a close call with Barbie at the Golden Globes. Having 5 nominations including Best Director and Best Picture, this film stands sturdy in the face of Oppenheimer and Barbie, the two titans of 2023.
As a French legal drama about a woman fighting for her husband’s mysterious death after falling from a height, the film is now available to rent on Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and iTunes.
While not available for streaming yet, keep an eye out for it!
6. Maestro
Grabbing 7 nominations, including Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper for their leading performances, the viewers are taken on a tale of the complicated life of Leonard Bernstein. This movie, when you watch it, you will understand why it nabbed seven nominations, despite Bradley Cooper’s nose gaining all the attention!
Stream Maestro on Netflix.
7. American Fiction
Garnering significant critical acclaim, 5 Oscar nominations, and viewership, American Fiction is recognized for its leading performance as well. Similar to the book publishers’ admiration for “My Pafology” within the film, the Academy votes also seem to be smitten with American Fiction, recognizing the talents of Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown showcased on the screen.
This is a satirical film, directed by Cord Jefferson, also famous for his work on “Watchmen”. This movie was based on “Erasure,” a novel by Percival Everett, published in 2011. American Fiction is currently in the theaters, so to appreciate the complex themes in this novel, it’s high time you visit your town’s cinema and understand the film better.
8. Past Lives
Nominated for Best Picture and Original Screenplay, this movie featured Celine Song as both the director and writer. As her first feature, Past Lives has etched its mark in history with quite charming and impressive achievements right off the bat.
Skillfully unfolding the tension between two people reuniting after several years, this film has a compelling narrative that serves as a heart-wrenching exploration of their past. Of course, Greta Lee is to be the one appreciated for it!
This rom-com is available to stream on Paramount+.
9. Poor Things
People have drawn comparisons between Barbie and Poor Things, mainly because both of these blockbusters have women venturing into the world with an agenda in mind, a world that is new and different to them.
However, in Poor Things, there’s no doll, but a revived human. Starring Emma Stone as the dead woman with the brain of her unborn child by a mad surgeon, this film has all the dark aspects that you’d expect from a dark comedy. For this film, the director Yorgos Lanthimos has earned himself a nomination in the Best Director category, while the film has become the second most-nominated one from the batch.
Available only in Theaters, for now, you can be the judge of the 11 nominations this film has received.
10. The Zone of Interest
The most horror type of film, The Zone of Interest, has brought together the Academy voters because they nominated the director Jonathan Glazer for his first Oscar nomination.
Depicting the real life of a Nazi commander Rudolf Höss who built his family with kids a home sweet home, which was right next to the horrors of Auschwitz. This film is a disturbing one, and it’s no wonder this film was nominated for Best Sound. How so? See for yourself and you’ll know why.
However, this movie is available in Theaters for now. So you will need a companion to get through the dour aura of this movie.
11. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
It’s high time for Marvel to hand the award themselves to Guardian of the Galaxy, as they have saved their parents by rocking the box office and earning a Visual Effects nomination at the Oscars.
Collecting the rest of the Guardians that were left after Gamora’s loss, Peter Quill mans up and tries to save them. Yet another galaxy fight that the viewers couldn’t get enough of, it’s impressive to see just how much the filmmakers try to stick to the original quality, so much so that they have landed a spot at Oscars 2024.
This film is available to stream on Disney Plus.
12. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
As much as fans wanted Into the Spider-Verse to earn a spot at the Oscars in 2019, now is the chance for Spider-Man to shine. Popular for being the sixth highest-grossing film of 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has snubbed a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film in the 2024 Oscars.
This film is easily available on Netflix.
How to Watch 2024 Oscar-Nominated Movies from Anywhere?
Now that you know the platforms where to stream your favorite Oscar-nominated movies, there is a hurdle that many people around the world often face: geo-restrictions. Sites like Amazon Prime, Max, and Disney Plus use geo-restrictions on their platform to limit their content.
It’s not the country’s fault, nor is it the platform’s. Such limitations are imposed due to copyright infringements. Basically what happens is that the content or movie is blocked to people in certain locations, and the only way to unblock such rules is to change locations.
As much as people think that changing device location works, it doesn’t. Changing your device location will only work if you’re not using the internet. As soon as you connect to the internet, your IP will show all of your information (location, status, etc). It’s easy to decrypt such information because if hacked, it can compromise your entire data.
Use a Virtual Private Network, so you can efficiently hide your location and stream without geo-restrictions, along with the fear of being hacked. We believe the best VPN for streaming is ExpressVPN because it doesn’t log any of your activity while also boosting your internet connection. This way, you get that smooth and high-quality streaming.
If unsure how to use a VPN, follow these instructions:
- Get a VPN of choice. For streaming, trust ExpressVPN.
- Download and configure the VPN app on your device.
- Once installed, sign in to your VPN and connect with a server location where the streaming site is based.
- Go to any streaming website and sign in to start streaming your desired content.
Wasn’t that so easy? Why not start streaming today?
