One enigma that Marvel fans are still curious about is Wolverine and Deadpool’s relationship. Are they friends? Foes? Or something in between? The Marvel directors have left the dynamic ambiguous in almost all cinematic portrayals of the two characters. While hinting at a rivalry, some of the portrayals and appearances of the two characters show an underlying connection.
In the Marvel universe, Wolverine and Deadpool first met in the 1994 Wolverine comics. However, they share a similar background and origin story. They both got their powers from the Weapon X experiment. Wolverine got the adamantium skull and claws, while Deadpool got the ability to heal himself by infusing Wolverine’s mutant DNA. It is still an enigma how two people with similar backgrounds or, we say, similar DNA have incredibly different personalities.
Although the duo met in 1994 in Marvel Comics, they didn’t appear together until 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In the film, Deadpool is seen in a climactic scene where he fights with Wolverine and loses so terribly that Wolverine severs his head. Although his mouth was sealed, he still managed to make his fans smile with that last wink at the camera.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that X-Men Origins had ruined introducing Deadpool to the cinematic universe. Fans were buzzing online about the clash between their two favorite superheroes, so the introduction of Deadpool in the fight scene with Wolverine left them fuming. Thanks to X-Men Days of Future Past for officially rebooting the timeline of the X-Men cinematic universe.
The appearance of Wolverine in Deadpool 2 was much anticipated. However, the fans were disappointed as the movie did not picture the cameo the audience wanted it to be. However, at the end of the film, Wade Wilson time travels into X-Men origins, shooting Deadpool in the head to ‘clean up the timeline.’ the camera captures Wolverine standing in the corner in disbelief at what happened. So we can say the hints were there that something was brewing behind the curtains, and the fans would only find out when the time was right.
This summer might settle the dust about Wolverine and Deadpool’s relationship. The BTS footage circulating online shows the duo fighting each other, raising curiosity about whether the hatred between the two might escalate. The prequels have shown Wade Wilson making jabs at Wolverine, but the exact reason why they can’t stand each other is still unknown to the audiences.
The fans of Deadpool are coming up with various theories about the storyline of the much-awaited Deadpool 3. Some believe this part might shed light on the similarities of the seemingly different characters. On one hand, Wade is quick-witted and always has something funny to say, while Logan is more of the quiet, mysterious kind. One thing that connects them is the anger they harbor that Project X changed them forever.
According to director Shawn Levy, the movie will be fun to watch, different from the previous two parts. He added that “it will be less Deadpool 3 and more Deadpool and Wolverine,” implying the focus will be primarily on the two lead characters.
Meanwhile, fans have to wait until July to find out what this highly anticipated movie has in store for them. Will Deadpool 3 settle the score? Will the duo’s relationship status be revealed, or will they leave us wanting more? I guess we will have to wait until July 26th, 2024, to get the answers.
