Maria Robotnik has been added to the cast list of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3, indicating a darker turn for the storyline.
The blue sprinter, Sonic, is going to bless the screens once again in theaters on December 20, 2024, but not before its filmmakers set up a dark frame for its viewers. That’s right, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 may take on a shady look because of an addition to its cast list.
As Maria Robotnik is confirmed to appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the otherwise lighthearted and comical plot of the movie series is about to take a U-turn. Maria Robotnik is a canon character from the Sonic video game, series and comics, and she has friendly ties with Shadow, an anti-hero, who risks everything to protect the world (even if it means using firearms and dynamites).
Maria Robotnik is Dr. Eggman’s cousin, and the granddaughter of Gerald Robotnik, who was the genius scientist behind Project Shadow (that gave birth to Shadow). To keep Maria safe, Shadow was created and thus formed an undivided relationship with his friend to protect her from any harm. Though GUN soldiers killed Maria when Project Shadow was shut down.
The set of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has seen actor Alyla Browne playing Maria. Although the costume picture hasn’t been shared by the actress herself, there is a picture on her chair with her name on Instagram, which is a good tease. Given Maria’s tragic end in the original Sonic storyline, it’s surprising to see Paramount’s Sonic in another tone than light and comical.
While Project Shadow has been given snippets in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Shadow himself shows up in the post-credits scene, it does make sense that Maria Robotnik would be included in this upcoming installment. Along with GUN Commander Walter’s order about shutting down Project Shadow, it’s apparent that it all leads to Maria’s demise.
Sonic the Hedgehog movie series has been pretty light and family-friendly until the second installment, but we can safely presume that the third is going to be a pretty dark one. Meant to be a sick child who was heartlessly gunned down, Maria is going to meet the same fate, catapulting Shadow into a fit of rage and fury.
It all comes down to how the turn of events is depicted. It’s been going around that Browne was cast only to be shown in flashbacks, so Maria’s death could be spared from being illustrated on the screen. Regardless, it is pretty sad and tragic that the little girl, already having battles to fight on her own, was killed cruelly. Even if she is just mentioned in the movie, it’s a sign that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be having a different take than its predecessors.
More information on Jeff Fowler’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is yet to be released officially, so nothing is too confirmed yet. However, we are positive that this third installment will be streaming on Paramount Plus, so be on the lookout. There’s no such trailer, so stay tuned for more information!
